Costs and real consumption: VW Golf VIII R

How much does the sportiest of all Golfs consume with its 320 hp turbo four-cylinder? We found out in the test.

In Generation 8, the Golf R not only gets 20 hp more than its predecessor, but also an even sportier setup overall and even a drift mode. With a base price of 49,400 euros, it is now also more expensive than an Audi S3 Sportback. Even in everyday life, the top golf is not for bargain hunters.

Our test consumption

In the test, the VW Golf R exceeds the WLTP specification of 7.8 l/100 km by exactly one liter. The 320 hp unit consumed 8.8 l/100 km, which currently results in fuel costs of 14.96 euros. Anyone who handles the gas pedal extremely gently, as in our eco-consumption lap, can reduce fuel thirst and costs to 7.0 liters or 11.90 euros. If, on the other hand, performance is required, the turbo petrol engine indulges in 11.8 liters, which means that the 100-kilometer costs break the 20-euro mark. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (01.07.2021 /Super Plus: 1.70 euros/litre).

Monthly maintenance costs

The state collects an annual vehicle tax of 238 euros for the Golf-R pleasure. 387 euros are due for liability insurance for the same period. The comprehensive costs are 208 euros (partly comprehensive) or 671 euros (fully comprehensive). This results in monthly maintenance costs of 340 euros for an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers and 616 euros for twice the mileage.

How to test

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption drives. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The basis for calculating the fuel costs is always the price quoted on the "more tanken" portal on the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes assuming an annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers without loss of value. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and comprehensive insurance with Allianz, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (not under 21). At Allianz, SF12 offers a discount rate of 34 percent for liability and 28 percent for comprehensive insurance.

Conclusion

The VW Golf R with 320 hp 2.0-liter four-cylinder turbo petrol engine costs at least 49,4000 euros and consumes an average of 8.8 liters, which results in fuel costs of 14.61 euros per 100 kilometers. The monthly maintenance costs are 340 euros for an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers. If this increases to 30,000 kilometers, the sum increases to 616 euros.
