N ur the best die young: James Dean was 24 years old, Bob Marley 36, Elvis Presley at least 42. It is apparently similar in the automotive world - the shorter and more intense the phase of life, the greater the hero status later on. The BMW M1 was only produced 460 times, of the icon M3 CSL only 1,634 copies, while the 1 Series M Coupé, which was discontinued in the summer, rolled off the production line around 6,000 times. Too many to become a cult object? Not at all, as the last M model to date, the little Kraft-Bavarian still embodies genuine M values - light and agile.

BMW 1 Series M Coupé as a sought-after tuning object

For the farewell tour, two tuned 1-series M extremists take the stage in Hockenheim and get their good old N54 biturbo boom. While the tuning versions from AC Schnitzer and Versus Performance are warming up, a third broad-jawed one from the high-speed forge at G-Power is cooing its lubricants to temperature 300 kilometers from Hockenheim. A fat power dome on the bonnet of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé reveals that underneath it lies a very special engine of art.

The conference call in the BMW league of the fastest ones zips back to Hockenheim. Both of the tuned BMW 1 Series M Coupés are meeting here for the second time. For the author, the test work turned into interesting development work for the BMW tuners, until the two test cars were able to shine in top form.

Newcomer first, Versus is allowed to run first. When the first attempt was made, the dieselspeed lettering was still emblazoned on the white paint - but the marriage of the VLN racing team and the young BMW tuner Versus from Gelsenkirchen broke up before the final. But sport auto is interested in gossip as much as trunk volume.

The tire choice on the first visit to Hockenheim was more interesting. Toyo R888 in 19-inch format (265/30 front and 295/30 rear). As expected, the attempt backfired because the Toyo usually only works properly on extremely light vehicles. With Toyos, the 1,491-kilo Versus BMW 1 Series M Coupé already pushed over the front axle when braking. He also turned in imprecisely. The lap time was therefore only a few tenths below the 1.14.1 minutes once set up by the production model (see Supertest from issue 7/2011).

Versus 1er with the finest tuning ingredients

Sponge on it, like all tuners, Versus also gets a second chance with us, after all, apart from the initial tire selection, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé has been garnished with the finest tuning supplements. On the chassis side, the Gelsenkirchen-based company relies on a KW Clubsport coilover kit that can be adjusted in compression and rebound. In addition, Versus installed KW uniball support bearings made of high-strength aluminum for camber adjustment on the front axle.

Delicious, delicious, the axle geometry alone makes M fans twitch their right foot excitedly. Minus 3 ° 39 'degrees on the front axle, minus 2 ° 06' degrees on the rear axle (standard target values for the 1 Series M Coupé: -0 ° 55 'to -1 ° 45' at the front, -1 ° 33 'to -1 ° 45 'rear).

In addition to a stainless steel exhaust system from Kat with four 85 mm tailpipes, a Stoptech brake system with larger brake discs and six-piston fixed calipers at the front and four-piston fixed calipers at the rear are used. The tuning program on the BMW 1 Series M Coupé is completed by various carbon parts (front splitter 1,299 euros, diffuser 1,199 euros, rear spoiler 699 euros).

And the final wheel and tire combination for the fast lap? Dunlop Sport Maxx Race in the size 285/30 R 19 on powder-coated Versus MCR1 rims in the format 10 x 19 inches ET 17 all around. Even if the 285 slippers on a BMW 1 Series M Coupé sound as believable at the front as Formula 1 tires on a Punto, this choice is the right choice for the 1 Series M for visits to the racetrack with small steering angles the big city, here the driver would often have to back up or recirculate the rear with a throttle.

exemplary steering behavior in the Versus-M

No problem in the Versus One - thanks to the performance increase called VM1 EVO III, the N54 B30 T0 should now squeeze 439 PS and 697 Nm torque (series: 340 PS, 500 Nm). No BMW has turned in as precisely as with the Monster Dunlop slippers and such a camber on the front axle. In combination with the precise BMW steering, the tuned BMW 1 Series M Coupé gets a summa cum laude in terms of steering behavior.

While the production model tended to react extremely agile to load changes, the Versus-M impresses with its balanced handling. The limit becomes noticeable with the Sport Maxx Race rubbers (warm air pressure all around 2.0 bar) through very light lubrication - no hint of borderline drama, perfect for tourist drivers and track day fans. With 1.12.2 minutes, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé from Versus runs around the small circuit as fast as the recently tested Alpina B3 GT3.

G-Power plants new compressor andCharge air cooling system on

G-Power please - the BMW Ligaradio switches from Hockenheim to the Bavarian community of 2,700 people in Aresing, Autenzell. In a picturesque country idyll between farms, 40 employees work here on BMW high-speed cars, which not only ensure Vmax rapture in Europe but also in America and the Arab world. After numerous speed records, the G-Power G1 V8 Hurricane RS is now set to become the fastest BMW 1 Series M Coupé in the world. sport auto exclusively drove the prototype of the testosterone one.

In a four-month operation, G-Power transplanted the four-liter V8 engine from the still current BMW M3 including DKG. But G-Power wouldn't be G-Power if it weren't for an additional compressor. The specialists adapted the new T1-523 centrifugal compressor. Another noticeable feature in the filled engine compartment of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé is the cast aluminum airbox, which not only contains a sports air filter but also a water-flow charge-air recooling system. In combination with the air-water heat exchanger, the charge air is cooled down to optimize performance. Sounds like a nuclear reactor in the compact one engine compartment? Something like that, the small series, limited to 30 vehicles, will later produce 600 hp and 580 Nm maximum torque.

Schnitzer relies on extreme falls

AC Schnitzer calls, back to Hockenheim: After BMW Team Schnitzer was crowned DTM champion here, tuner AC Schnitzer wants to win the crown of the fastest road BMW on the small circuit in Hockenheim. For this purpose, the Aacheners reached deep into the tuning bag of tricks. The road-legal AC Schnitzer racing suspension with Sachs dampers and Eibach springs was trimmed by the BMW specialist in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé with extreme camber values (-3 ° 00 'front axle camber, -2 ° 30' rear axle camber), while the toe values were +/- 0 degrees at the front and 0 ° 18 'track at the rear remained more at series level (series target values track: 0 ° 02' to 0 ° 18 'front and rear).

Thanks to the additional control unit, the performance of the three-liter biturbo increases to 400 hp and 560 Newton meters of maximum torque. Subjectively felt and also objectively verifiable with measured values, the Schnitzer 1 sprints faster and scores with better pulling power than the BMW 1 Series M Coupé from Gelsenkirchen. Without a performance measurement, only the following judgment can be made. Either the Schnitzer has more muscle strands under the hood than stated or the Versus does not have the predicted engine power.

Appearance of the Schnitzer-M Coupé starts nervously

Enough of the discussions, let's enjoy the straight six-cylinder sound of the power one. Here, too, as with Versus, the double-end silencer has easy play without an insulating rear seat and screams into the pilot's ear as insistently as Campino at a live concert of the deadPants.

AC Schnitzer also needed two attempts before the M ran perfectly. Schnitzer technical manager Mani Wollgarten initially installed a shorter rear axle differential (4.15 instead of 3.15) with a Drexler lock. On the small course, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé from Aachen initially milled almost exclusively with gears four, five and six. But in this configuration the one twitched its rear nervously, a top time was out of the question at first.

The AC Schnitzer strategists brooded over the set-up again and went back to the final drive ratio and locking of the production model . In addition, the adjustable anti-roll bar used by AC Schnitzer on the front axle was adjusted to be harder again.

After modifications to the chassis and tires to victory

New attempt: 1.9 bar hot air pressure of the 265 Dunlop Direzza 03G semislicks on nine and ten inch wide 18 inch wheels - it's done. The turning behavior of the Schnitzer BMW 1 Series M Coupé is as crisp as that of the tuning competition from Gelsenkirchen. Compared to the Versus BMW, however, the Schnitzer brake system equipped with Pagid RS yellow works a little better than the largely identical Versus model with EBC Orange Stuff pads. As a result, the driver in the Schnitzer can brake a touch later and, thanks to the now generally more neutral suspension setup, accelerate a little earlier.

The Schnitzer rear reacts to load changes with just the right amount of agility. In a comparison of the two Dunlop semi-slicks, the Direzza is a bit more pointed, more like a racing tire than the Sport Maxx Race with its slightly smoother transition from static to sliding friction. Overall, however, both Dunlop semislicks offer a similarly high level of grip. After the DTM squad, will the tuning BMW 1 Series M Coupé with the name Schnitzer also win?

Yes, in 1.11.7 minutes, the BMW 1 Series M Coupé from AC Schnitzer snatches the G-Power BMW M3 from the G-Power BMW M3 GTS ( test in issue 6/2011 : 1.11.8 min) the title of the fastest BMW road vehicle on the small circuit in Hockenheim.

G-Power prototype runs from a standstill 314 km /h

Hissing, whistling, hissing - while the two racing ones with StVZO diploma trot back into the pit lane in Hockenheim, the G1 V8 wants Hurricane RS to restore the G-Power honor in the BMW 1 Series M Coupé, at least longitudinally - full throttle from the start. The V8 tears open its eight individual throttle valves with short strokes instead of short of breath and screams its power out through the specially made stainless steel exhaust system.

No biturbo punch, but compressor pressure pushes the first prototype of the BMW 1 Series M Coupé with it steady, infernal power development from the speed cellar forward. That theG-Power-Einser is a bit more top-heavy due to the engine conversion, is hardly noticeable in everyday use. Nevertheless, the accelerator pedal needs to be carefully controlled from a standing start during sprint attempts, otherwise the white Michelin Pilot Super Sport aroma of the 295 rollers quickly escapes from the rear wheel arches.

Into the G-Power area ' German Autobahn '. The KW suspension of the G1 is still dampened a bit too hard on the rear axle, which is noticeable in high-speed curves. Otherwise, like a dragster, the chassis set-up is perfect for straight-line stability. Ruts do not make the backs of the hands damp. 280, 290, 300 - the first excursion in the G1 V8 Hurricane RS ends at 314 km /h.

'We are still in the test phase, the prototype does not yet have the performance of the 600 hp level. Later we offer a small and a large V8 kit, 'explains G-Power boss Zoran Zorneke. With 600 hp, the G1 should finally mutate into a super-one, sprint to 200 km /h in 12.7 seconds and reach a top speed of 330 km /h. Reason enough to say again what many MW disciples are waiting for - an sport auto invitation of the G1 V8 Hurricane RS to a comprehensive longitudinal dynamic test including 0-300 km /h measurement and a power measurement the Maha roller dynamometer used by sport auto .
