Mercedes Sprinter gets modern diesel engines

Mercedes will be introducing the new diesel generation OM 654 for all versions of the Sprinter in the fall. Four power levels are available.

Ever since Mercedes launched the new Sprinter generation in 2018, its electric version has played the leading role in communication . But of course the diesel versions still form the backbone of the Sprinter portfolio in the tough everyday life of delivery vans. So far, the engine generations OM 651 (2.2-liter four-cylinder) and OM 642 (three-liter V6) have primarily been used. But in the fall, these older diesel engines will be replaced - by the new OM 654.

Four power levels from 114 to 190 hp

This two-liter, four-cylinder turbo diesel has been in service in the Sprinter panel van and in the chassis with rear-wheel drive since the end of last year. Mercedes is now rolling out the engine to all other Sprinter versions - regardless of whether they are front, rear or all-wheel drive. It is available in four power levels: the variants with 84 kW (114 hp), 110 kW (150 hp) and 125 kW (170 hp) are forced-ventilated by a turbocharger; the top engine with 140 kW (190 hp) has biturbo charging.

Depending on whether the respective Sprinter is classified as a commercial vehicle or passenger car, all engine variants meet the Euro VI-E or Euro 6d emissions standard. The friction-optimized barrel coating in the four cylinders helps, as does the close-coupled exhaust aftertreatment and the dynamically controlled multi-way exhaust gas recirculation. Thanks to its improved noise and vibration characteristics, the engine should also raise the level of comfort.

With mono-turbo and 1,950 cm³

Speaking of comfort: As an alternative to the manual six-speed gearbox, Mercedes will in future be offering the 9G-Tronic automatic gearbox. However, the Sprinter does not receive the very latest expansion stage of the OM 654, which is used with a displacement of 1,993 cubic centimeters in the new C-Class . In the Transporter, the engine is used in the 1,950 cc variant that has been known since 2016. Prices start at 27,358 euros for the 114 hp Sprinter panel van 211 CDI Standard in the Worker Plus version (including VAT).


From now on, all Sprinter variants will benefit from the new OM 654 diesel engine generation, which Mercedes has been offering in its passenger car models since 2016. The diesels cover a wide performance spectrum, meet the latest emission standards and are also available with a nine-speed automatic transmission for the first time.
