Mercedes electric coaches from 2030

Daimler is working with partners to develop modular e-drives for coaches. The first e-buses are due to arrive in 2030.

From the end of this decade, Daimler Buses wants to offer fully electric touring coaches with its Mercedes-Benz and Setra brands. The goal is clear, but the way to get there is not yet. In order to get closer to the goal, Daimler Buses has joined forces with renowned research institutes and practitioners from the industry to form the Electrified Coach project – ELCH for short. The project is funded by the Federal Ministry of Economics and Climate Protection.

Long-distance with electricity

The electric drive has already arrived and established itself in city buses. On long-haul routes, i.e. in coaches, diesel still dominates. The problems here are the requirements for a long range in long-distance transport, flexibility in use, opportunity charging for batteries, high payload and the space required for passengers and luggage. ,

The aim of the Electrified Coach project is the development of a modular powertrain including two zero-emission and practical demonstration vehicles over the next four years. They are then tested under real operating conditions. The developers want to rely on synergies with components from the truck division of Daimler Trucks. The installation space of the electric coaches should correspond as closely as possible to today's diesel buses. ,

Project partners are the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology KIT (ITIV - Institute for Information Processing Technology); the University of Mannheim (MISES – Mannheim Institute for Sustainable Energy Studies); the Technical University of Kaiserslautern (iMAD - Institute for Mechanical and Automotive Design and SAM - Chair of Fluid Mechanics and Turbomachinery) and the operator Flix SE with its green Flix long-distance buses. ,

Daimler is already using electric drives in city buses. From 2030, the touring coaches will also use purely electric drives. These are being developed in the ELCH project together with partners.
