E uropa's transporter market leader gets a new heart: In the bow of the Fiat Ducato of the 2020 model year, only turbodiesel engines of the Multijet II generation, which now all meet the Euro 6d-TEMP emissions standard, pull. The central innovation of the turbocharged diesel engine with a displacement of 2.3 liters is the turbocharger with variable turbine geometry. This should cultivate the engine running, improve the elasticity and at the same time reduce fuel consumption.
Four power levels between 120 and 180 hp
As before, Fiat offers the Ducato in four power levels, with the data of the respective engines increase slightly. The basic version, which is only available with a manual transmission, develops 120 hp and delivers its maximum torque of 320 Newton meters at 1,400 rpm. The most popular engine is likely to be the 2.3-liter diesel with 140 hp and a maximum of 350 Newton meters at 1,400 rpm. It can be combined with manual and automatic switching.

The versions of the engine located above have a reinforced crankshaft, different pistons and a modified turbocharger. Their values: 160 PS and a maximum of 400 Newton meters or 180 PS and a maximum of 450 Newton meters, the latter only being achieved in combination with the automatic transmission. As an alternative, Fiat offers the Natural Power variant. Its three-liter engine develops 136 hp, delivers a maximum of 350 Newton meters at 1,500 revolutions and is powered by methane.
New automatic and assistance systems
The nine-speed automatic transmission is also new. It works with a hydraulic torque converter, offers three different shift strategies (normal, eco and power) and allows manual interventions.Fiat integrates the “Eco-Pack” as standard, which includes an automatic start /stop, an intelligent alternator, an electronically controlled fuel pump and a fuel-saving switch.
In addition, Fiat is offering new models for the 2020 model year Ducato Assistance systems on: blind spot assistant, lateral movement detection when reversing, emergency braking and lane departure warning, traffic sign detection, automatic high beam and low beam as well as rain and tire pressure sensors. There is also the “Engine Idle Preset”, which increases the idling speed of the engine in order to operate additional electrical devices on board.
Electric version of the Ducato is coming in 2020
After the facelift a new infotainment system from Mopar is available. It includes a seven-inch touchscreen, USB connection and DAB radio and offers the option of storing the dimensions of the vehicle. These can then be taken into account during navigation in order to prevent the Ducato from being sent through streets that are actually too small for it. Motorhome drivers in particular should be happy about this function. The new infotainment system also has Apple Carplay and is compatible with Android Auto.
Fiat is only announcing another innovation for the Ducato for the time being: In the course of 2020, the van will also be available with a battery-electric drive . The Italians have not yet revealed any details, but the Ducato Electric should be able to be pre-ordered by selected major customers from the 2020 model year and further developed with their help. Even at the date of the market launch and at the prices of the facelifted Ducato with diesel and methane gas engines, Fiat is still keeping a low profile.
