Vintage Rallye: Sachsen Classic 2021

Around 160 old and youngtimers from the years 1926 to 2000 started on August 19th at the Sachsen Classic in Zwickau. The oldest car in the field this year was an American Buick Standard Six from 1926. The cars covered a total of around 580 kilometers over three days. The route led this year from Zwickau to Dresden.

Saxony's longest automobile museum set off for the 18th time: until August 21st, it invited visitors to take a trip back in time to eras long past. Pretty marketplaces and picturesque routes give this traditional rally of Motor Presse Stuttgart its very special flair. Prime Minister Michael Kretschmer has taken over the patronage of the 18th Sachsen Classic and explains how good and important it is "that events like this can take place again. The Free State of Saxony is setting a good example here and showing how clever concepts can be used to bring cultural makes life and competition possible."

In 2021, the Sachsen Classic presented itself as a rally for classic cars, which is not about achieving top speeds, after a year's break due to the Corona pandemic with many highlights: It started on August 19th from 12 p.m. on the square of the Friendship of Nations in Zwickau. From there, the first part of the day led to Arena E in Mülsen and on to the legendary steep wall in Meerane. Then it was time for the traditional test at the Sachsenring. The day's destination was Zwickau.,

On the second day, the route of the "World Heritage Montanregion Erzgebirge" stage led from Zwickau (Place of Friendship of Nations) via Hartenstein and the Preßnitztalbahn Jöhstadt-Steinbach to the lunch break. The 222-kilometer stage then went via the Sachsen Energie Eiskanal (Altenberg) to the destination of the day in the state capital Dresden, the International Congress Center (ICC) on the Ostra-Ufer.,

After the stage "World Heritage Montanregion Ore Mountains" began the final day (Saturday, August 21) in Dresden. The longest stage with a total of 320 kilometers was themed "120 Years of Škoda Motorsport", as the route continued via Sebnitz to Mlada Boleslav in the Czech Republic. From the lunch break at the Škoda factory, we first went on to the museum of the particularly traditional car brand, which is celebrating its 120th anniversary in motorsport this year. From the company headquarters in the Czech Republic, the rolling automobile museum moved on to Bad Schandau and the V8 plant in Pirna. From 3.45 p.m. the first cars were expected to cross the finish line at the ICC in Dresden.,

The Sachsen Classic inspired with a unique show of automotive history in the Free State: grandiose pre-war cars from once highly regarded brands such as Alvis, Bentley, Buick, Horch, Packard or Talbot - sometimes a sporty roadster, sometimes a gleaming chrome luxury cabriolet. This was followed by the robust everyday cars that used to serve as family carriages in East and West, such as the VW Beetle and Golf, EMW and Wartburg or Škoda Octavia. Ferrari and Maserati enriched the field of elegant cars from the brands Facel Vega, Mercedes, Jaguar, Porsche and VW Karmann Ghia.,

The team Drehteile Herbrig /V8 Werk, consisting of Markus Hendel and Christoph Herbig, emerged as the winning couple at the Sachsen Classic 2021 . They drove a Chevrolet Corvette C2 Stingray SplitWindow from 1963 so precisely through the special stages that at the end of the three days they only had 394 penalty points on their account.,

The 18th Sachsen Classic was a complete success. Not just for the winning couple, but for all classic car fans and those who want to become one. We are already looking forward to next year!
