Costs and real consumption: Porsche 928

Porsche 928 for 36,000 euros. We show what the car today costs in everyday life and how much fuel it consumes.

The 928 turns 45 this year. It might not have been Porsche's biggest star in the 1970s. But it's definitely the one now, with us in Hockenheim - we have it as "the old one in the test" and show what the car costs today and how much fuel the car uses in everyday life.

Our test consumption

The Porsche 928 comes with a 240 hp 4.5-liter eight-cylinder engine, which at its first deliveries in autumn 1977 according to DIN at a constant 90 km/h 11.3 and at a constant 120 km/h consumed 13.0 liters per 100 kilometers. In our test, the car consumed 15.6 liters, which means fuel costs of 28.70 euros for this route. The Eco consumption value is significantly lower at 11.9 liters - the costs here are 21.90 euros. Sports drivers chase an average of 21.8 liters through the combustion chambers - makes 40.11 euros. The fuel costs are calculated using the daily updated fuel price on our partner portal mehr-tanken.de (as of June 27, 2022, 1.84 euros per liter Super).

The annual vehicle tax for the Porsche 928 is 192 euros with an H license plate, without 1,141 euros. According to Allianz Direct* , liability insurance costs 213 euros in the same period. A partially comprehensive insurance costs 113 euros per year, fully comprehensive insurance is 636 euros. If you drive 15,000 kilometers per year, you have to plan monthly costs of 408 euros if you include the increase in value, without an increase in value it is 533 euros. At 30,000 kilometers, the amount increases to 983 euros including the increase in value and 1,022 euros without it. This is how it is tested.

The auto motor und sport test consumption consists of three differently weighted consumption runs. So-called “commuter consumption” accounts for 70 percent. This is a journey from home to work, which averages 21 kilometers. A particularly economical, approx. 275-kilometre-long eco-lap is included in the rating with 15 percent. The remaining 15 percent is accounted for by the sports driver lap. The length is roughly the same as the eco lap, but the route includes a larger proportion of motorway and thus higher speeds on average. The calculation basis for the fuel costs is always the price indication of the portal "tank up more" from the day the article was created.

The monthly maintenance costs include maintenance, wear part costs and vehicle taxes for an assumed annual mileage of 15,000 and 30,000 kilometers. The calculation is based on the test consumption, a three-year holding period, no-claims class SF12 for liability and fully comprehensive insurance with Allianz Direct, including discounts for garage parkers and the restriction to certain drivers (accident-free/15,000 km per year, resident in the postcode area 70174, not under 21, partner drivers older than 25 years).

Conclusion

The Porsche 928 with 240 hp, 4.5-liter eight-cylinder costs 36,000 euros and consumes an average of 15.6 liters, which means fuel costs of 28.70 euros per 100 kilometers. With an annual mileage of 15,000 kilometers, the monthly maintenance costs are 408 euros including the increase in value and 533 euros without the increase in value. If the mileage increases to 30,000 kilometers, the sum increases to 983 euros with an increase in value and to 1,022 euros without it.
