Its beautiful shape shouldn't hide one thing: The Peugeot 4 06 Coupé is hardly less practical and suitable for everyday use than the sedan. All the better. He wasn't exactly the most popular. But it could have been, no question about it. Not much was missing, just a little time, he came late. Before that, there was no agreement at Peugeot: should we really dare, should we be the first large-scale manufacturer to screw a diesel engine into a sports coupé? The drive had another premiere in 2000. It made its debut in the 607 as the first series-produced particle filter.

A year later, the French took the risk and offered the Peugeot 406 Coupé with the 2.2-16V-HDI-Common- Rail diesel on. The customers thought it was good. The two two-liter petrol engines alone were more popular than the diesel. From the model launch of the coupé until its replacement in 1999, the gray cast iron four-cylinder with 132 hp made up 23.1 percent of total sales, the following aluminum version with 135 hp initially and 136 hp achieved 21.9 percent.

The note, almost a third of the Peugeot 406 Coupés were delivered with a three-liter V6, which deserves the clarification that it was available in two power levels, up to 2000 with 190, then revised by Porsche with 207 hp. And while initially one in five ordered a six-cylinder, after the switch to the more powerful version it was only a good one in ten. In terms of numbers, the 158 hp 2.2-liter four-cylinder petrol engine was of little importance: only 3.4 percent voted for it. And the diesel? Exactly 21.7 percent of coupé buyers wanted that in their 406.

They knew: The Peugeot 406 Coupé is - even if it might come across as a 'poor man Ferrari' from the outside 'denigrate - no sports coupe at all. It is basically a sedan in a nicer shape, designed by Lorenzo Ramaciotti, the same Pininfarina designer who drew the Ferrari 456 and the 550 Maranello.

Like the sedan and station wagon, the Peugeot 406 Coupé is on the same platform as the Citroën Xantia, but can appear completely independent. On its body - it is six centimeters longer, five lower and is 12 millimeters lower - there is not a single identical part with the two other 406 variants.

The effort was worth it. Hardly presented, the Peugeot 406 Coupé, as the first Peugeot model at Pininfarina not only designed, but also tested and manufactured there, collected awards and prizes, and not undeservedly. In addition, sales exceeded expectations on both sides. Pininfarina and Peugeot, who have worked closely together since the early 50s and the 403, initially only signed a cooperation agreement for 70,000 units of the 406 Coupé.

But the Peugeot 406 Coupé combined, as written in brochures, 'the savoir-faire of Peugeot's engineers and the creative genius of Pininfarina' so nicely that the production figures finally reached six figures. And that, in addition to the coupé's successful shape, certainly had a lot to do with its qualities. The feeling of space may not be the most airy, but who expects that from such a two-door car? On the other hand, it spoils you with a space that nobody would have expected.

The character of the Peugeot 406 Coupé immediately reveals the character of the seats: They are rather soft and do not offer much lateral support. Which makes them a perfect match for the 406 Coupé. It's less sporty than the line initially promises. Although the handling has been tightened with a slightly wider track, shorter springs and tighter dampers compared to the sedans and station wagons, which are also not exactly sedate, suspension and rolling comfort remain the great strengths of the coupé, which, especially with the diesel, has a special charm between elegance and suitability for everyday use.

This is how much a Peugeot 406 Coupé costs

The prices for the Peugeot 406 Coupé start at well under 1,000 euros. In state 4, around 900 euros are estimated, hobbyist cars are sometimes available for 500 euros. If you are looking for a copy that is well-maintained, you have to search a little longer - and plan around 3,600 for a condition 2 copy.

Good everyday cars are in between, for 2,000 to 2,500 euros you can be happy. Even for longer, because thanks to good rust prevention and many galvanized sheets, there is the all-clear from this side. The high-volume technology is also robust, only the electrics and electronics should be checked thoroughly.
